Billboard Poster Printing – Its Methods and Developmental Processes
Billboard poster printing is a method of printing large-format posters for outdoor display. There are many different processes for this type of printing, including silk screening and digital. Each process has its own advantages, but the most important thing to know is that they all require a large-format printer, which can be costly.
One such process is silk screening, which was developed in the 1800s as an alternative to letterpress printing because it required less maintenance and produced higher quality results. Silk screen printers use screens made with nylon or other synthetic fibers stretched tightly over frames that have been coated in light-sensitive emulsion. The images to be printed are made by carving a rubber stencil and dipping it into paint and then laying the stencil over damp emulsion on the screen. The emulsion clings to the cutouts in the silk, leaving spaces where the paint will pass through and form an image on paper when it is pressed onto it. Then, using a squeegee, all of the areas that are not part of the image are wiped clean. This process can be repeated several times until there is a complete image.
Digital printing is also used for placing large format posters outdoors but uses different technology than silkscreen printing.
Conclusion
Large-format billboards have been made for more than a century (since 1886) as a form of advertising. The earliest large-format billboard printers used lithographic methods, stencil printing and silkscreen printing. A lot has changed since then. Digital printing on large format posters is now the most common method for this style of printing.
