As the first rays of light poked through the horizon Dylan gazed at the lush green meadows fondly as he paced slowly down the long dirt footpath. He was coming to know these meadows like the back of his hand, and the peaceful tranquility of the scene acted as a balm to his tired, tired soul. The path meandered smoothly through the grassy landscape, occasionally ablaze with brilliant patches of wildflowers, and ending at a white clapboard farm house.
In the still morning air a torrent of pungent smells flowed through his nostrils as he walked. A steamy scent of fresh cut grass. Pungent pig scent that wafted from the farms within view. The warm scent of recently baked bread that seemed to come directly out of the farmhouse. And he could smell a familiar smell that some would find unpleasant, but haunts Dylan's senses with a deep warmth. A smell of human sweat, mixed with a musky undertone of something animalistic.
6 am was a chill time of day, even for the month of May. A light mist hovered over the grassy meadows, giving the area a strange almost fairy-tale like quality. Dylan wrapped his arms around his worn robe and slowly walked up the steps to the white farmhouse. His mind still groggy as to how he had arrived here at all. The previous night he was strolling down the streets of the city near his small apartment, and now today he found himself out in the mountains.
Dylan shook his head as he approached the farmhouse door, perhaps what happened last night was some kind of bad dream? He had always had an overactive imagination, and an extremely vivid dream life. Perhaps these had finally gotten the better of him.
He raised a hand to knock on the door. After a moment of hesitation, he dismissed the notion and turned the doorknob. Gently he pushed the door open, prepared to head back to the city.
But then, much to his surprise he discovered no one was in the house. He walked inside and could not find anyone in any of the rooms. Then he spotted a trail of flowing light emanating from the back kitchen door. It moved slowly into the distance, ending right next to a small, white wicker basket. He smiled and headed down the hallway, hoping no animals had recently been they had just recently been moved.
As he got closer he could hear the light, but very definite cries of a newborn infant. He smiled, reached into the basket and pulled it out. He was holding a squirming bundle of joy, a tiny, freshly born baby. A satisfied smile crossed his lips as his children finally showed up.
It had been five years since he got married. He and his wife, Mary had thought they had conceived the day they were married, but the pregnancy lasted only 4 months with no baby to be seen. Dylan was overjoyed when Mary discovered she was expecting, but was disappointed to find the child was not his. However, they decided to keep the baby safe and raise it as their own.
This baby was a lioness, born on the solstice, an astronomical fact of significance for humans. The call for her arrival had been long overdue, and now Dylan and Mary welcomed their lioness. He wrapped his hands around his new cub and started to pet her lovingly. She looked at Dylan with her large, green eyes and roared happily as she regained her strength and started to find her place in this new world.
Dylan smiled again, and turned to head back to the rest of his family.
Two years had passed since Dylan and Mary had adopted their first cub. This little lioness had, and still has, a wonderful sense of personality and a determined, outgoing nature. Her name was Alice, and she was turning two soon. She was a surprising blend of her mother's outgoing, reckless spirit, and Dylan's more cautious, thoughtful nature.
Dylan smiled as he played catch with his newly adopted baby brother. The baby was 3 months older than his last brother, and was named Bobby over a year ago when they first came into Dylan's life. Bobby was a cub of very few words, but had an infectious laugh and an unshakable curiosity.
His parents had explained how they were taking care of animals in the woods. Unfortunately, there was high mortality among the younger cubs, and so Dylan and Mary decided to adopt these cubs, so they have a safe home and won't be culled by predators.
Alice and Bobby were settling in well to the new life. Dylan really hopes they never have to go back to the woods. He wanted them to stay with him and Mary forever, and with their help they could finalize the paperwork and adopt them properly. However, Dylan's lack of patience was beginning to bother him.
