Designing and Preparing the Vehicle for Wrapping

Designing and Preparing the Vehicle for Wrapping

When wrapping a vehicle for the first time, it is important to be ready. If you're not ready, then you may end up having a difficult time trying to wrap the vehicle. This blog post discusses how to prepare your car for wrapping and some helpful tips that will help get your project off to a smooth start.

This 4-step guide is designed for first-time wrappers who are looking for a simple and effective way of getting their vehicle wrapped. Using similar concepts from his other articles, this blog one gives some helpful ideas on what steps you should take when preparing your car before wrapping it with wraps like vinyl or cloth.

1. Get a Pre-Scrape Checklist

This list should be extremely detailed. It should include things like the suspension, lighting (e.g.: headlights and tail lights), the interior (e.g.: dashboard, door panels, seats), and the exterior (e.g.: mirrors, bumpers, body moldings).

Some of these areas may need to be scuffed before applying vinyl wraps to them. If this is the case then we suggest making a post-scrape checklist that will detail what areas of your vehicle were scuffed by hand or by machine (i.e.: buffer) and how they were scuffed (i.e. 800, 2000, or 3000 grit).

2. Inspect Your Car Carefully

Some beginners assume that since they are only wrapping their vehicle in 1 or 2 colors that they do not need to clean it before putting vinyl or cloth on it. This is a big mistake and should be avoided at all costs.

The truth is that no matter what you are going to wrap over paint, it needs to be clean. Otherwise, the finished product will not look good (unless you're going for an aged look). This means that you need to wash your vehicle with a mild soap and water before starting your project. We suggest using car wash soap and a soft water wash mitt.

3. Clean Your Wrapping Surface Carefully

When it comes to wrapping your vehicle, you cannot skip this step. Even if you're going to apply a vinyl wrap to only one section of your vehicle, extra care should be given in the cleaning process. This means that you need to use soap and water (not just a hose) to scrub the surface of the car down with your hands until it is shiny.

It is also smart to use a clay bar on the paint before applying vinyl wrap around it or putting cloth on top of it. This ensures that the paint is nice and smooth for when you begin applying the vinyl wrap. If a clay bar is not available, then it is recommended to use a polish on the paint. This will make your paint look smooth, but it will not remove any small scratches in the paint (e.g.: swirls, marring) that you would want removed before wrapping your car.

4. Protect Your Paint From Chalk Rubbing

The fourth and final tip we will give you is to protect your car's paint from chalk rubbing. Chalk rubbing happens when an inexperienced wrapper applies vinyl or cloth to his or her vehicle without first scuffing it up with 1000 or 3000 grit sandpaper.

The first thing you should do is to ask the wrapper if they plan on scuffing up the paint before applying their material. If they say no, then you should find a new wrapper who has more experience. The second thing you can do is to rub your vehicle with a clay bar or polish before applying the vinyl or cloth over it. The final option is to wait for them to tell you that they are ready for you to move. Then, check their work and make sure that the vinyl or cloth is properly wrapped over your car's surfaces.

So there you have it, four simple tips that will help guide your wrapping project from start to finish. If you have any questions about this blog or about the wrapping process in general, please feel free to leave a comment below!
