http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traders%27_Rule
1) Dividends – Dividends are payments made in cash by a corporation to its shareholders based on profits and can be issued as special dividends (cash distributions) or as regular dividends, in the form of shares of stock, or in another form such as property or stock rights. The dividend yield is the amount of dividends in percentage form, divided by the price paid.
Dividend Yield = (Cash per share+Dividends) / share price
Usually, dividends are issued when a company has income beyond its business operations and intends to reinvest it back into the company. However, some companies use their profits to pay dividends to shareholders instead of re-investing the money. Examples include banks and insurance companies.
One thing that makes me cautious when I invest in a stock with a low dividend stock is how strong or consistent that dividend is. It's important for a dividend to be strong and consistent since it's usually one of the things that attracts investors like myself.
Here are on of the best examples of a stock with a steady consistent dividend.
