The Publishing Business
The publishing business is a crazy business. It's easy to be taken in by all the marketing and huge advances but the truth is, it's not as glamorous as you might think. There are a few things that you need to understand before deciding if this career path is for you and I'll try to break them down for you below.
Some authors will tell you that this job is about being creative, about flying high on creativity and glory and being an artiste extraordinaire. They're not telling lies, it's true that authors can be creative, can fly high on creativity . . . but this is also a job and while there are a lot of exciting parts of it, there are also things that can be incredibly frustrating and depressing. So many people think they will write a book and then the money will just start pouring in. Some authors have that experience, but many have to hold day jobs while they try to promote their work. They continue to work their day jobs while they wait for their careers to take off but most never do.
Others think that this is a good career for writers who want to make money because, after all, self-publishing has been so successful for so many people over the past couple years. It's not. Only a small percentage of self-published books make any money and most will never break even. They'll likely have to continue to pay their day job while they wait for their career to take off which means they will end up working double time, more than anyone can reasonably handle without burning out.
There is nothing wrong with pursuing a creative career but don't try to use this as your main source of income unless you are prepared for the unexpected expenses (which could include taxes, storage space, travel and more) and minimal financial returns that come with being in the publishing game.
The technology has not changed as much as it could have in the past but there are still reasons to be wary of self-publishing.
In my opinion, if you want to write a book and put it out there for other people to read then you should always publish it through an established publishing house. You will make more money, avoid making some of the mistakes I just mentioned and you will get much better publicity for your book. But there are many reasons that authors like me have chosen this route instead of traditional publishing. Here's a quick list:
1) We know what we're doing. We've been writing for years and have already published several books successfully. We're experts in this genre and we know all the ins and outs of self-publishing. We can help you sell more copies of your book through our proven marketing techniques, taking advantage of all the ways that the internet has made it easier to connect with readers.
2) We have access to an established team with successful track records in this industry. We have connections we've made over the years with other authors and can get you listed on our web sites or on books that we work with, as well as getting you publicity through social media, reviews, interviews and more.
3) We understand how this industry works. We know the ins and outs of the business, we know what to expect financially, what publishers are looking for, what can make a book successful and so on.
4) We have a proven track record. Self-publishing your own book can be intimidating. You have to worry about editing, formatting, marketing, design and more. Our books have sold thousands of copies ourselves and we've helped other authors sell their books as well. We've been there before so we know how to set you up for success in the self-publishing world.
So, with all that being said, I hope you'll give us a chance to help you. You can find our books here on Amazon or visit www.phoenixsolarisseries.com in order to see all of what we're working on. I hope you'll consider letting me help you get your book published, because this is something I've always loved doing and I'm happy to keep doing it for as long as people keep wanting me to.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
Sincerely,
Phoenix Solaris
