I felt myself being pulled out of my sleep by some unknown force. I looked up from my bed in bewilderment as I stood up. The room was dark as it was late but since I was still trying to collect my thoughts, I quickly opened the curtains to see what was going on.
It was dark, but I could see, our colony. Buildings were sparse though the whole idea of the colony is that it is constructed, borrowed, copied and adapted so many times, that the colony looked unimpressive. Having worked on this planet for over 3 years, I had a good idea about the ecosystem and the primitive way the colonists live yet it was still strange to see them.
I heard a noise and I saw that a few other colonists were also standing up and looking out at the same time. I saw some movement at the edge of the colony in the direction of the outer wall. I got dressed and walked out of the room. I went down to the ground floor where I saw robots in what looked like some form of battle. With a shock, I saw that a small section of the outer wall had fallen, bricks and all and the added effect of a twisted metal pattern from the outer wall, it looked like nothing less than an explosion.
I could see the robots were fighting for control of the space. A few were scattered about in pieces and the 3 or 4 of them were fighting with blasters with a couple of the others. Inside their guns were some kind of creatures, they looked like similar to the Black Scorpions, but even bigger and much more dangerous looking with a sickly greenish glowing light to it. They screamed in a screeching high pitched sound as they fought with the small robots.
As I looked around, I saw a few of the other colonists had decided to get involved as they stood near the doorway that led out to the colony. I looked back at the robots as they fought. I spotted a small high tech weapon and picked it up. As I looked around, I saw that there were many weapons lying around so I got some blasters and then I looked at the creatures.
The one that I had seen fall off the outer wall was about 25 feet into the colony. The others were clawing their way around, seeking some kind of opening as they walked out of the colony, leaving only a trail of blood as they walked towards us. I looked at the fallen creature, its claws were ripped, torn, destroyed and to make it worse, it had this hollow green light up its arms that was almost like a smoke that had the appearance of infection.
I knelt down and was about to fire at the creature when I saw one of the colonists about to fire a blaster. So I did not fire, there was no point to it. I realised I had a plan, so I quickly called out, "those things are infected with some kind of infection".
The colonist turned around and I saw he had an old weapon and the other colonists had got the attention of the other creatures by firing blasters at them, while the robots and humans defended themselves from them. I could see from what a small distance we were, that the attacking creatures had claws, like a birds talons on their hands and feet. I realised they must be slow and clumsy, none of them could dodge the blasts, they did not have blasters, like us, they have these green glowing claws and weapons, but not technology to stand against us.
I offered the colonist a blaster to help him take down the monsters with. He took it and I wondered if he knew how to use it. I really hoped not because I was not sure how he was going to fire it. I felt my heart sink as I realised that some of the robots could not fight, despite the fact that their bodies were almost indestructible, they had restrictions.
Not all of them were armed. Some were used as support robots to build and construct the colony. Although these were designed to be complete replicas of ourselves, they were created to use whatever was laying around. Unlike some of the others that were designed to only use weapons, these could not shoot.
I still couldn't work out why they needed robots at all, unless they needed an army to defend the colony. I looked at the creatures as they clawed about. The colonists started firing, I saw that one of them screamed as one of the creatures had injured him as it slashed at one of the colonists with its claws. He stumbled as blood spilt from his arm as he fell. He hopped over to one of the smaller buildings and pulled a table over to stop the creature from reaching him from behind.
At least, that is what I thought I saw, but I must have been mistaken. The other colonists followed suit and were running towards the buildings to take cover. The robots and the rest of the creatures were too busy to notice. As they moved away though, I saw the beast stop, turn to the injured colonist and then the creature looked down at itself. It saw that it had some kind of strange energy from its wounds and that energy started to glow.
Conclusion
Three more battles were fought whilst I was watching. The largest of the creatures started to crawl through a window in the building where I was stood waiting and I opened fire on it as it entered into the room. It cowered in pain and I could see it was injured from its legs. A few of the other colonists tried to open up fire on the thing without saying anything.
