The November 1978 issue of "Mountain & Canyon Climber" magazine includes a story about Eduard Albert, a climber who in 1910 published a book called "Wir erschaffen die Kletterwelt." In it, he proposed the use of protection bolts to aid climbers.
Abstract: The article discusses how protection bolts were first used by another Austrian writer and mountaineer, Eduard Albert. Originally conceived as an idea for Alpine climbs, the device was modified to work on cliffs as well. However, only in recent years has bolt technology evolved from its beginnings to an all too common sight on mountainsides today.

BMW and Bridgestone's 'Bolt On' Road Tyre Design
BMW has teamed up with Bridgestone, arguably the world's leading off road tyre manufacturer, to produce a modified version of the popular C-tread design. The result is a 'Bolt On' version of this popular tyre.
Running with the concept that providing more traction in rough conditions can sometimes result in a safer approach to a particular obstacle, both manufacturers have taken different approaches to this meeting of minds and have created two new tyres to go toe-to-toe on the market.
BMW worked on their version by replacing some of the tread rubber in order to enable it to grip better on uneven surfaces. The result is a unique tyre that can offer better traction and climb ability on rough ground.
In addition to the tread modifications, Bridgestone have added a new 'Bolt On' version of the standard WRT (Wide Recovery Tread) tyre as used for dual purpose vehicles. This increases the amount of rubber contact with the road surface when compared to its original design, thus increasing its performance even further.
Both tyres are due to be released in 2008 and will be marketed under their respective brand names by the respective manufacturers.
