The Nine Principles of Business War

The Nine Principles of Business War for small businesses

1. Market share – don't just focus on profits, also focus on market share so that you have a bigger piece of the pie to grow in the coming years.
2. Follow competitors - don't be afraid to copy your competitor's moves, especially if they "win". If your competitor is a shoe store, they may offer better customer service and discounts than you are currently doing. Look to emulate them and steal their customers!
3. Comparative advantage - identify which things you do best and capitalize on those areas (for example, if you are an accountant who can do tax returns but not accounting). Focus on those things and expand into those areas of expertise.
4. Chain – hook up with another business that has complementary products/services. For example, if you are a hair salon, hook up with a barber shop that offers similar services in the evenings to do hair cuts for men. Expand your potential customers by creating a chain of businesses together so that your services can be offered in more locations.
5. Hiring - hire the best employees you can to help you do what you do best (the previous 4) and avoid hiring people who are not necessarily interested in the actual work but rather have ulterior motives for being hired (such as being hired to do something else but don't actually know how to do it).
6. New business - don't be afraid to take a risk on a new venture if you believe it will help your company succeed.
7. Advertising - do what it takes to get as much exposure as possible, just remember not to overextend your budget and end up with no profit because of advertising fees.
8. Sale – never discount your products just to get rid of them. Instead, wait until the right time where you can maximize return on investment for a bigger profit.
9. Quality – never be afraid to invest in quality (it will pay off in the long run) but if you can't afford it, work with what you have.

"The Nine Principles of Business War" was first published in 1993 and the book has sold over 450,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into 14 different languages including Russian, Polish, Hebrew, Portuguese, German and Swedish. This book is available at Walmart, Amazon and Barnes & Noble online stores among others as well as major bookstores such as Barnes & Noble.

In 2004, Chad turned the book into a 5-minute animated video and has been shown at numerous retailers in the United States, Canada and Europe. It has also been used by many attorneys as an educational tool for class.

In 2011, Chad joined the faculty of Palm Beach Atlantic University teaching Business Communication as a Certified Speaking Professional (aka CSP) to students in various classes. He teaches Business Communication 1 and 2 courses to seniors (juniors who are graduating high school). In addition to teaching, he works on his master's degree in Communication Studies while writing this blog post for Palm Beach Atlantic University on daily.com which is written for Palm Beach Atlantic University's online newspaper.

In June 2013, Chad announced he was writing a follow up book to "The Nine Principles of Business War" entitled "The Nine Principles of Personal War".

On December 31, 2013, Chad ran a final experiment in his blog post for 2011 to see how much money each day.com visitor would donate if they appreciated the work. He asked users to take a vow of silence and then took each one's word count dedicating the entire thing to them. All who pledged or raised money for charity did so at some point during the exercise and all were surprised and thanked him for what he was doing.
