Artificial Christmas Trees can be hazardous to pets which are most likely the animals that will come into contact with the artificial tree's needles or as a result of chewing on an artificial tree's branches and wands. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), pets are at risk of getting stuck and strangled and may develop infections, several states have banned the sale and use of artificial trees due to these risks. Despite these issues, some pet owners prefer fake trees that are pet-friendly.

Plastic Christmas trees are often shipped across the country in trucks, and people living near places where the artificial …trees were manufactured or packaged say they can smell a foul order coming from their neighbor's homes—and inside them." "The smell was so bad I had to move out into a hotel for four days," said one resident who didn't want to give his name".

The people who made the fake trees would cover the trees in plastic bags to hold the smell in and to keep them from getting moldy, consumers and neighbors say.

Several brands of artificial Christmas trees are manufactured in China, including the "Pre-Lit White Spruce Tree" sold at Wal-Mart by The J.C. Penney Company, Inc., as well as other retailers. These fake Christmas trees have been recalled due to risk of electrical shock or fire danger and/or defective manufacturing causing loose branches falling off during use. The most prominent recalls were announced on December 3, 2014.

Dishonest sellers have been accused of selling fake artificial Christmas trees. In the United Kingdom, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) found that five out of ten trees sold at major retailers are fakes. They described the common fake trees as "a bit lumpy, a bit lopsided, a bit too small." The OFT also said some fake trees were made out of "unsustainable pine".

Chrysal, a brand of artificial Christmas tree popular in Canada and the U.S., has been involved in lawsuits after its trees were shown to produce formaldehyde at concentrations above acceptable levels.

Conclusion

In terms of artificial trees, the general rule is that the more realistic looking the tree, the higher the price. However, in general most fake trees have a fairly limited service life of around 10 years. Therefore, unless you are happy to replace your Christmas tree every season it would be advisable to invest in a more expensive but longer lasting product. However an alternative would be to buy less expensive trees and using them for both Christmas and Halloween and then using them as garden plants.

Artificial Christmas trees can be highly flammable and thus pose a burn risk to consumers when they are used as they were not intended to be used.
