This post will tell you all about the history, importance and different forms of consumer awareness.
Many people don’t realize that it has only been in the last few decades that we have started caring about where things come from and how they are made. Do you know that companies have been using byproducts of animals in the foods we eat for many decades and it has only really been over the past few years that people have started to question and boycott those companies? And it is not as simple as just boycotting a certain product. Boycotting a product can affect a company’s revenue so much and it can also hurt jobs in America. Therefore, instead of boycotting a certain food, we need to follow what are called ethical guidelines.
The word ‘ethical’ here means just what it sounds like. It refers to the morals or values that one should possess when making decisions about right or wrong. Ethical guidelines have been developed to help people make the best decisions when it comes to their ethical purchases. If we buy from companies that follow ethical guidelines, they will allow us to feel more comfortable about where our money is going.
Ethical guidelines are not just a matter of opinion. There is a very specific set of guidelines that have been agreed upon by the companies, government agencies and even individuals who want consumers to have an assurance that what they are purchasing is made with the least amount of pain or suffering for the animals involved.
Thus it is very important to pay attention to the social responsibility guidelines that companies use when deciding which products they will put their name on. For instance, most of the major food companies have agreed to standards set by such agencies as the Better Business Bureau and even government agencies.
So there is nothing wrong with purchasing a product that is made from an organic or local farmer, but just because a product is made locally does not mean it has been produced in an ethical way. It simply means that when the product has been made, the farmers used natural resources and were not intentionally cruel to animals or humans.
Some of the other forms of consumer awareness are: how smart you are about brands, how often do you read the label and how often do you reflect on how the company was created, where did they get started and whether or not you want to invest your resources in a company that has already been established for some time.
As we all know, it is impossible to completely avoid purchasing products from large companies like Walmart or Starbucks. So when there is a choice between these companies and companies that make different choices than these larger corporations there is also an awareness factor at play here. Starbucks for instance only uses fair trade coffee beans, so it is definitely a better choice than if it were to use regular coffee beans.
There is a very good reason why these different forms of consumer awareness are so important. It is because they help us to make better decisions about how we want to spend our hard-earned money and where we want our money to go.
