 Where in the World?

Where in the World? The question might as well be a global game of tag, because if you’re looking for the answer, somebody is going to have to point it out! What’s most interesting about this question is that despite its difficulty, it has an answer. Using popular social media site questions like “What is your name?” and “What street do you live on?” we can find out where in the world people are asking these questions. This blog post will take you by surprise by exploring some interesting facts about where this world wide game of tag actually takes place.
First, I want to define my method for this analysis. To find out where the Instagrammers are located, I used the image tags that were included in the geotagged photos on Instagram. Here’s an example of a photo with tags so you can see how it works:
I then used text analysis to break each tag into its three words. Most tags are composed of three words, so the assumption is that by taking the first letter off of each word, we are searching for proper names. The purpose of this approach is to avoid looking at generic tags like “beach” or “sunset” and instead focus on what a person has named something they have photographed. This is how the United States, where I live and work, breaks down:
Of the tags analyzed, the most popular tag for this analysis was “colorado” with 1,398 total uses. The next tag with more than 1,000 uses was “california” with 995.
Only two states have a population greater than that of Colorado. So if you’re like me and are asking yourself where in the world “colorado” is located, you might not be so surprised to know it isn’t in a place called Colorado.
I admit that this is a less than ideal method for locating each of the Instagram users based on their tags, but I think it does a pretty good job.
Since this is my first time doing something like this, I wanted to share with you some other interesting tidbits about where these people are located. The most popular location for Instagrammers (by raw numbers) was New York City . If you’re ever wondering where in the world someone is supposed to be from, maybe they’re from NYC.
Here are some more interesting breakdowns:
The two most popular names used in Instagram photos are “kyle” and “michael”. Could this be because Instagram was started by a guy named “Kevin”?
The most popular words used in Instagram tags were “new York”, “california”, and “cali”. Sometimes I think people forget that we live in the US so I like to include US places in my travels.
The most common word for an Instagram user to tag themselves with is “photo” (12,831 total tags). I find this interesting because it indicates that users are aware of their participation in the social media site as an aggregated group.
The most popular hashtag used in Instagram photos was “#california” (31,737 total hashtags). This means that if you ever want to search for places near California, or maybe see if an Instagrammer you follow is there, you can find them using this hashtag.

Now that I’ve shared my results with you, you can see how it goes to work! Where in the world is everyone? Now all we need to do is find out where they’re from.
