this is a report that i read on univerese housing's facebook page. what it said was that they have a new program called "get young for less". it allows you to get private bedroom and a private bathroom with only having to pay $50/month.
I'm 16 and I require a wheelchair to get around and this is something that prevents me from getting the same accommodations as my sibling.
When I called the main number, I was told to call the local affiliate because they deal with apartments in my area. Next, when I did call this local affiliate, they told me that they could not help me.
When I attempted to print out more information about the program, but it would not allow me access to it. Then when I tried calling the main number again I got a message saying that there was nothing new on their website and to contact an associate directly for more info.
What they are offering is an incentive for disabled people to live in public housing. It's very discouraging that there is no program in place to make sure that disabled people can live on the same terms as other people. I am not able to get around without a wheelchair and this enables me to get by just fine, but what good does it do for me? Why do I have to be allowed in the building but other people don't have to?
There is also another program called "Pennsylvania Kensington" that also offers apartments and loans for disabled people, but none of these programs offer anything more than those offered by local affiliates. I really wish there was something out there...
