If You Build It, Will They Come?
There are plenty of people that say, "If you build it, they will come," but Andy Rachleff has made a business out of making this mantra true. Andy's personal style is to be obsessed with the details and strive for perfection. He believes in going the extra mile and doesn't worry about what other people think.
He started his first company as an engineering intern at Intel in 2005 when he discovered he was an entrepreneur at heart. Since then, he has grown six other companies to $200 million+ in revenue each (and one of them is still going strong). His firm does engineering-heavy contract work for big names like IBM and Google. His companies are a great example of "If you build it, they will come."
Key Take Aways:
1. Know your strengths and weaknesses.
Andy believes that the key to achieving success is knowing what you're good at and knowing what you're bad at. He built his company around his strengths and he knows how to communicate this to the partners that he works with. He continuously communicates with his team about their strengths, there by inspiring them to be the best they can be. Andy also tries to find people who have complementary skills so they can help each other grow together as a company, while still staying true to their own personal style.
2. Find a co-founder and a staff that can do what the company needs to get done.
Andy doesn't believe in being the "idea guy." He is not afraid to find other people who are good at what he isn't and make them part of his team. Andy works best with people who have complementary skills, because they all bring value to the table.
3. Make sure you have a solid income stream.
It's important for any business owner to generate across multiple revenue streams, so that if one dries up, the business is still able to thrive and keep on trucking forward. One of Andy's companies has a steady stream of contracts from one client, with the rest of their business coming from other contract work. Make sure your business doesn't depend solely on any single source of revenue.
