Shut Up, Put Up, and Get Some Quiet Back

Shut up, put up, and get some quiet back. This is the message I’ve been trying to spread for years. We are living in a noisy environment that is not healthy for our physical and mental state.

In this blog post I am going to share with you 10 things you can do if you want more peace and calm in your life. Some of these things will be focused on the environment we live in, while others are focused on what we do when we are feeling chaotic inside. All of these tips can help bring balance to who we are as individuals, families or communities.

I hope this will provide you with some relief... :)

1. Pick up your cell phone every 2 minutes.

When you pick up your phone, this is called a ping, which means that you are checking for new messages, emails and similar. I know that this may not be possible for some of you, but if you can manage to check on your phone every two minutes at least, then that will help. Notice the habit of checking the cell phone during the day — it is not just at night time when things are most stressful!

2. Become a paper-less person.

This one is fairly obvious since we all know what we can do with technology these days... but it is important to remember that new technologies come and go. Paper is still a very stable and reliable technology.

3. Make decisions without listening to the opinions of others first.

Decisions are not made by everyone and what is popular these days to hear is that our decisions should be based on what everyone else thinks we should do. This is another aspect of noise that we need to overcome in order to build a more peaceful environment inside of us.

4. Do not let your television run without your attention.

You are often told that you need to watch the news, that you need to keep up on what is happening in the world. This is very true, but at the same time we need to realize that if we do not choose what we are watching, our minds will gravitate towards the most noise and that could be anything from infomercials to horror movies.

5. Get outside and get some fresh air every day.

The old saying that you need at least 30 minutes of sunlight every day is something that you should always remember. This is true even if you spend the majority of your time indoors, because it is still light between the hour of 12:00 and 2:00, so take advantage of getting out there for at least 15 minutes.

6. Take a walk around the block every day and look for quiet places to sit and relax.

If there are no quiet places near where you work or live, then why not create one? You can use a bench, a garden or even just a corner close to where you work where people won’t bother you.

7. Cultivate a garden in your home or apartment.

This can be anything from a few potted plants to something you would find in your backyard, but it is important to remember that using an indoor garden will keep the noise down so that you can enjoy what you have planted and not have to worry about what is being said when you are in the garden.

8. Give up on watching movies or television after 9:00 at night.

One of the biggest offenders we tend to use in our lives to get through our work days is television and movies during the afternoon and evening hours. This is why it is important to give up on this at the end of the day and not get sucked into watching anything that could keep your mind on track instead of on what is going on around you.

9. Eat dinner with your family every night.

Even if you are a single child or adult, it is important to also cook meals for your family and eat dinner with them every night. This may change over time, especially when you meet someone new in life, but for now do not skip out on eating dinner as a family. Being part of a group like this will help to create positive relationships and well-being in you as a person.

10. Read a book every day.

It really is no surprise that reading is also an important part of building a peaceful mind, as often we become too distracted by our busy lives to read something that might take away from the noise and create some calm.

So, please feel free to let these 10 tips guide you towards finding more peace and quiet in your life — it may be a very simple thing like refraining from checking your phone every two minutes or becoming completely paper-less in your home.

Or it could be a more challenging goal like taking a walk around the block every day or trying to create a quiet space in your home.

At the end of the day, the goal is to find ways to create peace and quiet in our lives and eventually find ways to experience this peace and quiet all over our environment. It is a choice that we all need to make if we want to experience more inner peace in our lives.
