3. The Cooling of America?
"Today, the remnants of great civilizations are crumbling into the sea, and generations of irreplaceable knowledge and wisdom are being destroyed in an instant. We have become so efficient at killing people that most of our human targets don't even know they're dead until the smell hits them."
Description: I work at a gun range in Ventura County and we have a lot of customers that are retired military personnel. These guys tell me stories that I almost can't believe, but when you have 2 or 3 different people tell you the same story it's a little hard to dismiss it as "exaggeration". Just thought I'd share the first story that really blew my mind.
One of the range officers (who retired from the Navy Seals) told me about a mission he was on in Iraq. He said he was leading a team that was checking out what they thought might be an ambush site; as they were doing their initial sweep they encountered a man and woman cowering in an alleyway. The woman was wearing what appeared to be an explosive vest and had wires leading from it to her ears, with small detonation devices attached to the tips of each finger. After she triggered an explosive that killed one of his men, he killed her with 5 shots from his M4 into her face at point blank range.
The man said that he had gotten into a fight with the Iraqi police and they had given him a rough time of it before they let him go (they had mistaken him for an insurgent). The police stopped and searched one of his men, then came across the woman; man and wife were both in similar clothing, so the police called it in and "arrested" them both. The local military unit picked up on that call from a cop car so the team went in to get them out of there but as they approached they could hear glass breaking and metal clanking over by the side of the house. They entered through an open window into what seemed to be a back room.
They searched the room and found nothing, but there was a small 12 year old boy sitting at the head of the table wearing only a diaper. The officer asked if he could see his parents; the boy answered yes, so they handcuffed him to a chair and brought him out. They took the mother out first and found her cowering in another room. When they opened her door she saw three dead bodies on the floor, each of them having been shot in the head. They brought her back in with one of two bodies thrown over her shoulder, then dragged out what appeared to be a large piece of something metal shaped like a tube or pipe held together with some wood and masking tape. It was sticking out of her eye socket.
They brought the man out and he had a completely different story. He told them that there were two insurgents in the house, they had trapped them in a room with 5 people, then shot the woman when she triggered her explosive device. Then they shot him 5 times as he tried to disarm the man of his AK47 before taking him to another room and shooting him 4 more times as he lay on the ground. The last shot was put through his neck and still had its entry hole in his temple. One of the insurgents in custody said that "one of them" was a woman who "had explosives strapped to her. He said that the insurgents had fired on them and then fired into the house and killed him. They recovered a 5.56mm bullet from his back, which matched the caliber of the assault rifle in their possession.
They brought the boy in and tried to question him, but it was clear that he didn't understand what was going on or why they were asking him questions. After an hour of trying to talk to him they brought his parents over, who asked if they could identify their son for them. That's when they saw that he was missing both eyes. The father told them that the morning of the incident he had been helping his son wash his face and noticed that one of his eyes was growing cloudy. That day a friend who was an eye doctor had come over to take a look at it, but told him there was nothing he could do for it. The next day they were all sleeping in the living room when they heard strange noises outside and woke up to find their house surrounded by men with guns. They woke their boy up and told him that he would have to go with them (the police). He started kicking and screaming, so they put tape on his mouth to keep him quiet.

Conclusion: This is all pretty scary stuff. I don't have a lot of answers here, but here's my initial thoughts:
This story tells me that the world is changing, not only in how we're living, but how we're dying. Can a man be so evil as to kill his child to cover up the fact that he killed 4 other people? Or can a group of people (police?) be so evil as to kidnap and murder children while they sleep? The fact that these things are happening isn't new information; we've known for decades that there were human rights violations happening around the world.
