Mindfulness, when applied correctly, is a powerful tool for maintaining a positive mental attitude.  Mindfulness can be defined as the practice of continuously being consciously aware of the present moment.  It is not focused on the future or past, but on the here and now.  Mindfulness is important because it helps you eliminate negative thoughts and feelings that can prevent you from reaching your full potential.  In order to do this, you must become more aware of yourself and how your past has shaped who you are. To understand your present thoughts, feelings and actions, it is essential to be mindful so that your experiences will not become painful or stressful anymore.
How to be Mindful?
The process of mindfulness can be broken down into three different steps which require a great amount of practice in order to gradually establish good habits.  The first step is to be completely aware of your breathing.  When you are breathing, you must begin by observing it as if you were watching a movie in slow motion.  You will find that this descriptive title is appropriate because you will find that your whole body starts to move naturally with each breath.  It feels as if the breath is coming from the deepest parts of your being, and it flows through all of your channels and pores no matter what position you are in.
The second step is that of observing your mental activities with the same detail as your breathing.  You must watch everything that goes on inside your mind without judgment or criticism just like how a child watches a movie.  This is a very difficult step because you will find that your mind tends to jump from one thought to the next without you being able to control it.  It's essential that you keep your attention on observing yourself even when your thoughts try to change back into negative ones.  The key is not to judge the thoughts that come up, but just watch them go away.  If you find yourself in conflict with a particular thought, then it might be helpful to write it down so that you can come back to it later with a clear mind.
The third step is that of experiencing life as if for the first time since we are born.  Before you begin this step, you must put everything that is happening around you in the present moment.  So if your partner just bought a new shirt for herself, then you must feel happy for her because she looks really nice.  However, be aware of how this affects you and whether or not it makes your feel sad or jealous.  When you are able to experience something without judgment, it will become easier and more effective to clear out the negative emotions in your mind.
How Mindfulness Will Benefit You?
Mindfulness helps improve your ability to concentrate on the tasks at hand by eliminating the interference of distractions brought by emotional imbalances in your mind.

Mindfulness is a very important subject that you must be aware of.  If you are unable to see every step of the process for yourself, then you can always ask someone who has been practicing this technique to help you.  It will not hurt to try out mindfulness and see how it affects your outlook on life.  We all know that life doesn't always work out the way it's planned sometimes.
