Creating a Habit of Experimentation and Risk-Taking

"In a world where perfectionism is praised and the outcomes of experiments are more than often predetermined, risk-taking becomes a thing of the past. Keep in mind that it's important to experiment in life and work because trying new things will allow you to find meaningful innovation for your designs."

In this article, we explore how one can encourage risk-taking and experimentation within their design process. By experimenting with techniques early on, designers can lay a foundation for future projects to build upon.  For example, they may learn through trial and error which typeface works best for their website or app as well as incorporate design patterns that have shown success elsewhere into their work. Experimenting and risk-taking is important because it helps drive innovation into your design. We suggest some specific tools to help encourage this in your work:

Begin engaging with the topics covered in the article using the accompanying Think & Do Tank.  We want to know how you experiment, what works, how do you keep things fresh, and what framework do you use to help guide your experimentation?  Please submit an entry to the think tank here .

We'd like to thank everyone for their participation and view points. We appreciate all of the feedback and insights, and we do plan on revisiting these topics in the future. As you can see, experimentation is a hard topic to tackle since it's so subjective and different for each designer. We hope that you are able to move forward with new ideas, tools, or methods that will help you get out there and try new things.
