  Developing basic computer and internet literacy


You know that you are not the only one who's been struggling to connect with the internet. In light of this, 
we feel it imperative to address some basic computer and internet literacy skills. With all of the high-tech equipment out there, 
we want our children to be able to use it effectively so they can reach their full potential academically and personally.
While we do not have all of the answers when it comes to how to teach these skills, we
do have some suggestions that will get you started. 
1. Develop a strategy for teaching children computer and internet literacy.  Set goals, decide on the best methods and be sure to include opportunities for continued practice outside of school.  Expect that students will have questions and be ready with an answer at all times!
2. Start simple – introducing new skills in context can help young learners understand why computer and internet literacy is important.  It's not enough to teach children how to use the computer; they need to know why it is important.
3. Keep your student's interests in mind when teaching computer and internet literacy.  Children learn best through hands on experiences that incorporate their interests.
4. Include technology in all subjects and assessments, even if you are using blended learning approaches.  Technology is part of the curriculum, and it should be used frequently as a way of teaching specific content related to learning goals and advancing learning needs.
5 . Teach students how to manage their time online, including how to take control of their device when it starts up, shut down or restart.  Students should also learn about privacy settings and social media usage.
6. Use a variety of tech tools in your class.  Having students work in groups to create a website or presentation will not only help them develop computer and internet literacy skills, but it will also support their content area learning. Students should be able to collaborate using the internet as an effective resource to find information to include in their presentation or use specific software programs that will allow them to incorporate graphics, photos or text into their project.
7. Practice!  Just like with any skill, this takes time and effort – be sure to keep at it!
8 . Be a positive role model!  Students learn best when they see their teacher using technology in an effective way.  If you are having trouble figuring out how to use technology, ask the help of a librarian or mentors and ask them to come in and show you how it's done.
9. Know your students' capabilities and monitor their progress.  Assessing what they know should be done on a regular basis, particularly when students are expecting to take a test that includes computer or internet literacy skills.
10. Plan ahead and have fun at the same time!  Students will have more success if they know there is something in it for them – whether that is connecting with other students or making cool websites….or all of the above!
