Great Portraits in the Great Outdoors

A great portrait doesn't just happen in a studio. Great portraits happen outside. Like this world class photographer, who happened to snap these amazing shots during a nature hike in the Pacific Northwest. Outdoors, our hair is windblown and our clothes are rumpled - pictures of us indoors often only show half of our face. And when we're outdoors? We're more ourselves than ever! Click through for some fabulous examples of how to capture the great outdoors with your camera and use them to create compelling portraits of your own family.

Approximately 10,000 participants from all over the world gather on the beach of Guanahacabibes in Cuba to take part in one of the largest gatherings of people, clothing color and plastic at X Festival 2007 held from February 24 through 26. This is a massive annual festival called X Festival, which is organized by the artist Cesar Cañas (CeC) and his wife Monica León. In X Festival there are no established limits or laws although there is an advisory code of conduct that helps to create a healthy environment for all people who attend. The festival was begun to spread tolerance among peoples and cultures.
The premise of the festival is the freedom of expression, which means there are no restrictions on clothing and accessories and there are no sponsors. I was born in Mexico City and raised in Long Beach, Calif. until I was 11. My parents are from Cuba and I have been going to Cuba for over 20 years.
Quite recently I started photographing due to a desire to reflect upon my life through images that show where I come from as well as where I'm at today. The idea for this project was based on the Cesar Cañas photography book "X Festival" published in 2005 that features a collection of his photographs from the festival along with other images he takes during his travels around Cuba.
