Nokia will host commercial OMA PoC and Presence services for 3
Today, Nokia announced that it will provide commercial presence and business communication services to 3 in the United Kingdom. Nokia's solution, which is powered by its own IP-based network platform called EPCglobal (EPCGlobal), provides guaranteed low latency for businesses across the country. As a result, it is able to offer a competitive voice service with high quality voice equipment. It is also highly scalable with capacity of up to 20 million connections per month.
This latest announcement follows previous collaborations between 3 and Nokia when they deployed 4G LTE networks together in 2014 as well as when they deployed a national UFB network at the end of 2017. Both collaborations were aimed at delivering the next generation network capability for emerging markets and on-going rollouts in the UK.
"We continue to see significant demand for our commercial products in both business and residential markets, and are delighted to now extend our offering to 3," said Timo Toikkanen, President of Nokia Networks. "Our EPCglobal solution is one that we have decided is best suited to meet the requirements of 3's customers, and is key for us to support their digital strategy."
"We are excited by this opportunity," said Oli Hollingsworth, Chief Digital Officer of 3. "This demonstrates how we are leading the market in enabling our business customers to realize the full benefits of digital transformation."

Conclusion:
The FTTH proposition for 3 means that they now have a very cost effective and flexible platform to support their customer's needs. No longer are they dependent on a "one size fits all" solution from BT, who have traditionally been the supplier of infrastructure to 3. A range of vendors can now compete for this business including Nokia as well as other vendors such as Huawei, ZTE and Fon. This also means that 3 will not need to roll out a FTTP network if the majority of their customers are happy with the performance of this network which is likely due to the increased bit rates available versus DSL, in addition to support for new technologies such as P2P and Mobile TV.
