Product Review: JVC DLA-RS2
The JVC DLA RS2 is a high-end digital audio recorder. It records in the PCM or DSD format, which is common for high-resolution music production as well as precision audio engineering. It's capable of handling 1/4" and XLR inputs and has a signal to noise ratio of 129 dB with a sampling rate at 24 bit/96 kHz. The RS2 also features USB 2.0, SD card support for recording up to 128 GB of data, and remote control capability with infrared signals that can reach up to 60 feet away from the unit.
This particular product is designed for both recording and playback during live concerts. Its two channels of audio can be used to record stereo sound in both PCM and DSD. It's been said that DSD is the "next generation" of high-resolution audio, but I believe this format is more analogous to SACD than a true high-resolution format because it samples at a rate of 1-bit instead of 16 or 24-bits, which provides an audible difference when compared to other formats such as PCM or even FLAC.
To the left are the 1/4" TRS combo jacks and XLR inputs located on the top of the unit. There are also three inputs to the left and right of that which are used for microphone use. The LCD display can be turned on or off, as well as the backlight. The input selection buttons are located below those inputs.
In basic operation, the unit will detect sound and begin recording if it detects an input signal. It's also capable of record-pause-record, which is handy for live music recording sessions because it allows you to simply leave the unit off when not in use to conserve battery power. Some people may find this useful for audio and video recording, recording voice memos while in an airplane or while traveling (like I do), etc.
The RS2 also supports some basic recording functions such as digital timecode, AES3 input/output, and stereo linking. I used this unit for several years while working as a music industry engineer in Nashville. It's a very nice piece of gear that does the job fairly well at a decent price point.
